Berenice Darrer
Biography
Berenice Darrer was
born in Windhoek, Namibia in 1976 and moved to Vienna in 1982, where she
studied painting at the University of Applied Arts from 1995 to 2000. After
having been awarded the Förderpreis des Landes Niederösterreich for her diploma
thesis, she was immediately invited to solo and group exhibitions both in
Vienna as well as, Linz, Milan, Tokyo, Berlin. She received further recognition
such as the Prize of the Expert Jury, Renault Art Award; Purchase Museo di Arte
Moderna, Ferarra and the Baumann Foundation for the Lentos Museum, Linz; Artist
in Residance, Japan; Boston Consulting Group Art Award and Atelier Stipendium
Spinnerei Leipzig.
The artist lived in Tokyo for six months, which had a strong influence on her painting; in particular, she often incorporates her impressions of woodblock prints and mangas into her work. The artist's paintings seem sensitive, she captures carefree moments. They combine pop culture, movement, play of light and shadow to make a dynamic, optimistic and youthful statement. Her art is full of buoyancy and joie de vivre.
The artist lives and works in Vienna.
