Biography

Eduard Angeli studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and history at the University of Vienna. In 1965 he graduated from the class of Robin Christian Andersen. From 1967 to 1971 he lived in Istanbul and taught as a visiting professor at the Academy of Applied Arts in Istanbul. He returned to Vienna in 1971. Eduard Angeli lives and works in Vienna and Venice. On the occasion of Eduard Angeli's 75th birthday, the Albertina Vienna is showing a retrospective of his work, presenting paintings and drawings from the artist's beginnings in the 1960s to the present day. In 2003 he was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honour for Services to the Province of Vienna.

Reduction is characteristic of his mostly large-format oil paintings. They are lonely, empty landscapes, whereby people are extremely present in their conspicuous absence, which brings with it a strongly melancholic character. Eduard Angeli describes silence as a temporal quality, he sees it as the moment of pause.

The artist has lived and worked alternately between Vienna and Venice since 2005.
